Is spam meant to be read or really just meant to generate sales of anti-spam products?

Someone calculated that it was so inexpensive to send spam that even if only 1% of recipients bought what was being sold, it would still be cost-effective to send it. However, I receive so much that I estimate that the average person reads less than 1% of the spam they receive.
How do we know, really know, that these organ-enlargement, questionable medication, Nigerian funds, etc., promoters really exist? Could the companies that make money from anti-spam products be secretly behind most or all of the spam, and sending it themselves in order to increase their profits from anti-spam products?

What is a good anti spam (not antivirus or antispyware) program?

What is a good anti spam (not antivirus or antispyware) program I can recommend to a select group of customers?
I some of my off time I volunteer to help groups of senior citizens with keeping their PCs working properly. As you know SPAM is a major problem to everybody. But it is really upsetting to this particular group, as for many of them this is the only way they can keep in touch with their families.
I already have the PCs protected from viruses and spyware. I am just interested in anti spam that does Outlook and Outlook Express on XP and Microsoft Mail on Vista.
I like to compare free and paid ones because some of my customers don’t have a lot of money. And cost is a major factor here because most of these people are living on a fix income.
Does anyone think that Yahoo deliberately allows bulk spam to build up to sell its new anti spam download?

When it comes to spam, Yahoo takes the cake. With all that money it rakes in, you’d think they could find an answer to help erradicate it.
